Welcome back to the 2016-2017 school year!

I hope everyone has had a great summer and is eager for the start of a new school year.  To all of our new families, we are glad you are a part of the Ranchview community and look forward to seeing you at school events and activities.

Be sure to mark your calendar for Wednesday, August 31st for Meet the Teacher Night from 5:45 -7:00 pm.  We will start the evening with a general Parent/Teacher/Student Association (PTSA) meeting in the library at 5:45 pm.  Teachers will be in the cafeteria from 5:45 – 7:00 pm so you can put a face with the name on your student’s schedule.  Also that evening we will have two important parent meetings for students enrolled in any IB Diploma Level course or Dual Credit Course.  The IB Course meeting will be at 6:00 pm and the Dual Credit meeting will be at 6:30 pm.  Both of these meetings will be in the Library Annex.  Meet the Teacher Night is a brief, informal meeting with the teachers.  If you would like to schedule a longer conference with the teachers, please feel free to schedule a time with them before/after school or during their conference period.

As we start the new school year, keep in mind these Back to School tips for parents to help your student get off on the right foot this school year.

Set up a bedtime and wake-up routine. Adolescents are notorious for not getting enough sleep. The average amount of sleep that teenagers get is between 7 and 7 ¼ hours. However, they need between 9 and 9 ½ hours.  Ensuring that your student gets enough sleep will help them remain balanced with all aspects of their life.

 Get to know new teachers. There will be open houses, orientations, and other meet-and-greet options at the beginning of the school year. Try to attend these events so you can meet your student’s teachers.  At the very least, send an introductory email that includes how you can help during the school year, however big or small.

Plan healthy lunches and snacks. The better you plan out the meals in your home, the healthier choices you will make for your kids. When you pack protein-rich snacks and lunches, balanced with fruits, vegetables, and other wholesome items, you ensure that your children will have the energy and brainpower to make it through their school days.  The RHS cafeteria serves both breakfast and lunch.  Encourage your student to take advantage of this option.  It also reduces the amount of cooking you have to do at home!

Organize clothing. Of course you will need to donate or otherwise get rid of the clothing that your kids have outgrown, but you should also take the time to carefully organize what is left. Review the District Dress Code so you what is not allowed at school.  Attached is a link to the dress code.

Create a routine for homework every night.  Students may not have an assignment for each class that is due the next day, but they should take 10 to 15 minutes to review their notes and assignments completed each day in class.  By reviewing the content a few minutes each day, students are more likely to retain the information for longer periods of time.

Set up a staging area. Find a central spot to store everything related to school, including backpacks, upcoming outfits, and a dry erase calendar with family schedules. Try to keep this area free of clutter and other non-school items so that you can find what you need, when you need it—and quickly. Have the kids help you stock it with school-related items and keep it clean and functional. Find some inspiration here.

Talk to your kids about bullying. Research shows that one in three kids experience bullying at some point in their school career—and in the increasingly digital world, the consequences can be extreme. Make sure your kids understand the right way to treat their peers, and when to speak up if they see someone else being bullied. Also make sure they know when to come to you if they feel they are being bullied.

Ask your kids about their concerns. The start of school is exciting, but can also bring some anxiety—especially when it comes to the unknown. Take a few minutes to ask your kids what they are most looking forward to during the school year, and what things may be worrying them. By giving them a forum to express their concerns, you can help them work through any worries in advance of school starting and clear up any issues that could lead to a bumpy start to the year.
